The sample head is screwed onto a 1. 83m (6ft) to 3. 05m (10ft) extendible aluminium pole. In use, the sampler is pushed down into the material to the depth required and the material flows through the head. When the head is withdrawn, an end flap shuts and the sample at that depth is retained.
